Teary SZA Chokes Up After Grammy Win for Best R&B Song: ‘I Came Really, Really Far’

SZA got emotional as she took the stage at the 2024 Grammys to accept the award for best R&B song.

“Sorry I’m out of breath because I was changing then I took a shot and I ran here,” she said as she ran on stage and greeted Lizzo, who presented the award to her with a big hug. “But Lizzo and I have been friends since 2013 when we were both on a tiny RedBull tour together opening up in small rooms for like 100 people. And to be on the stage with her is so amazing, I’m so grateful.”

She continued, “I would like to thank my parents, my mom and my dad, God, Top Dawg, Punch, all of TDE and my siblings at TDE, to my godparents, to my niece.”

“I just.. I’m sorry, I’m just really overwhelmed,” the singer said as she got choked up. “You don’t really understand. I came really, really far and I can’t believe this is happening and it feels very fake.”

As she finished up her speech, she gave a shoutout to Taylor Swift in the audience before hilariously rushing off stage. “And I’m… Hi Taylor! I’m just really grateful. And I’m not an attractive crier. Have a good evening.”

SZA’s win for “Snooze” off 2022’s SOS beat out “ICU” by Coco Jones, “Angel” by Halle, “Back to Love” by Robert Glasper ft. SiR & Alex Isley and “On My Mama” by Victoria Monét.

Jones, 26, earned her first-ever Grammy nominations at this year’s show, earning nods in multiple categories for her 2022 album What I Didn’t Tell You, including best R&B album and best new artist, as well as nods for “ICU” and “Simple,” a duet with Babyface.

Coming into the televised awards ceremony, she was already a winner. She took home the award for best R&B performance for “ICU” and told Laverne Cox on the red carpet that she was feeling “so many emotions.”

SZA accepts the Best R&B Song award for "Snooze" onstage during the 66th GRAMMY Awards at Crypto.com Arena on February 04, 2024 in Los Angeles, California.

“I’m really trying to keep it together. I think I’m just reflecting on everything that got me here. And it makes me emotional,” she said during E!’s Live from the Red Carpet show. “I just want to continue to inspire the girls who look like me to just keep pursuing because all of this wouldn’t have happened if I gave up and I’m just grateful I did not.”

Halle earned a nod for the category for “Angel,” the titular track off her 2023 album. The new mother — she welcomed a son with her boyfriend DDG at the end of the year — has previously been nominated five times, including two nods for her 2018 joint album with her sister, Chloe, The Kids Are Alright. At the time, she was only 18 years old, while her sister was 20, and she made history as one of the youngest nominees ever.
Glasper’s “Back to Love,” which features SiR and Alex Isley, is also nominated for best R&B performance, and marks the producer’s 14th nomination. At last year’s awards, he won best R&B album for Black Radio III, and he has accepted four other wins throughout his career.

SZA’s “Snooze” was just one of her whopping nine nominations at this year’s awards show, making her the most-nominated artist at the 2024 Grammys.

Among her nominations include song of the year, best R&B performance and record of the year for “Kill Bill,” as well as best traditional R&B performance for “Love Language” and best melodic rap performance for “Low.”

Hazel Monet Gaines (L), John Gaines (C) and US singer-songwriter Victoria Monet (R) arrive for the 66th Annual Grammy Awards at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on February 4, 2024

The hitmaker is also up for best pop duo/group performance with Phoebe Bridgers for their haunting SOS duet “Ghost in the Machine.”

With 24 total nominations, she’s also a winner, having taken home the award for best pop duo/group performance with Doja Cat in 2022 for “Kiss Me More.”

Monét earned seven nominations at the 2024 Grammys, leading the pack behind SZA and alongside Bridgers and engineer Serban Ghenea. Aside from the nod for best R&B song, the “Moment” singer is also nomination for record of the year “On My Mama,” best R&B album for Jaguar II and best new artist.

She also made history as her 2-year-old daughter Hazel became the youngest-ever Grammy nominee for her feature on “Hollywood,” which is nominated for best traditional R&B performance. The song also features Earth, Wind & Fire.
