Matt Camp Details What Exactly WWE Wants From Its Press Conferences
Unsurprisingly, WWE doesn’t want journalists asking about sexual assault allegations and lawsuits.
Highlights
- Former WWE employee Matt Camp has gone into tremendous detail about what the company expects from its press conferences.
- Camp explained what WWE wants them to be an extension of the show during which fans ask softball questions.
- WWE’s press conferences have made waves recently after Triple H was ill-prepared for more serious questions regarding Vince McMahon and Drew Gulak.
The intention of a press conference is for what happens and what is said during it to make headlines. That’s the entire point of a press conference. However, there have been a couple of instances recently where questions asked during post-PLE WWE press conferences have made the wrong kind of headlines, at least if you were to ask WWE. Matt Camp, who was previously the host of WWE’s The Bump, has detailed what exactly the company wants from its press conferences, and it’s not journalists asking controversial questions.
Serve Up Softballs
Camp is no longer with WWE but detailed on his Wrestling Matt Show (H/T to POST Wrestling) that he was a part of press conferences in the past, welcomed in to ask questions when he asked as WWE knew he would ask softball questions that would keep the show moving.
I talked to [WWE PR’s] Chris Legentil… and he kind of gave the heads up of, ‘Hey, you can do this. Yeah, we’d love to have you ask a question.’ You know why? Because I was a reliable person to ask a question. I wasn’t gonna say anything crazy, I work there.
Camp did add that ahead of Survivor Series 2022, so during a period when there wasn’t quite as much controversy in WWE as there has been for the past few months. However, he confirmed that even then, so presumably even more so now, despite being among real journalists fielding questions, WWE wants its press conferences to be an extension of the show.
They want fans in there, they want people that want to be part of the show, that don’t want to mess with their part of the show. The press conference is part of the show… They want this just to be an addendum to the end of the show, we wrap things up and we let people speak a little bit and show their excitement and for the most part, they want softballs.
Controversial Questions At Recent Press Conferences
Triple H has been on the receiving end of recent WWE press conferences making headlines for the wrong reasons on two occasions. The first was when he was asked about the Vince McMahon lawsuit, which had been filed days earlier, and he was entirely underprepared, even claiming he’d not read through the suit. Camp noted on his show that even if WWE does want to keep press conferences an extension of the show, Triple H still needs to be better prepped for tougher questions, especially ones about topics that will almost certainly be covered.
The Game came under fire again for his press conference performance when he was asked about Drew Gulak. Again, a topic that had dominated wrestling headlines in the weeks prior, Triple H resorted to taking a shot at the sites that had reported on Gulak’s release.
