Some of WWE’s bigger contracts have been nearing their ends in 2024, but most have been renewed before they’ve been allowed to run down entirely. Drew McIntyre committed his future to WWE after speculation he might be considering his options, and Seth Rollins also signed a new deal right before his previous one was about to run out. Becky Lynch has opted to go a different way with it. The Man’s current WWE deal expired on Friday night, meaning the seven-time Women’s Champion is now officially a free agent.
It has been almost a month since it was first revealed that Lynch’s deal was nearing its end with no new contract or extension signed. When those reports started circulating, Lynch was the Women’s World Champion. The Man has since lost that title, losing the championship to Liv Morgan and King and Queen of the Ring. Lynch had a rematch on Raw last week, losing again and appearing to wave goodbye to fans after the match.

Clearly Lynch planned on taking some time away from wrestling, something that has been reported on since her Raw farewell, and seemingly something that has been in the offing for a while. It’s believed Lynch was supposed to disappear for a while after failing to dethrone Rhea Ripley at WrestleMania. However, when Ripley was forced to relinquish the title shortly after, Lynch returned to bridge the gap between Ripley’s injury and Morgan becoming champion.

There’s a chance that had Lynch taken her time off as planned and therefore been out of the public eye, her contract would have expired without anybody noticing. There will naturally be rumblings about what she will do next, and Chris Jericho has even commented on the likelihood of Lynch signing with AEW. I’d assume that Lynch wanted some time off and that since her contract was about to expire, the two parties let it run out and there’s an unofficial agreement in place that when Lynch is ready to return, she will sign a new deal and pick up where she left off.
It’s a shame that Lynch’s deal expiring didn’t time out a little differently. Had it happened just two weeks ago, or if WWE had held off on Jordynne Grace showing up in NXT for a couple of weeks, WWE could have capitalized on news that Lynch was a free agent getting out by having her show up unannounced in TNA. Sure, some fans wouldn’t have been fooled, but others might have believed Lynch had really signed with TNA. Either way, it would have, and in fairness still could, make for a great moment.
